Lately, our back yard has become a bird nursery of sorts. A mockingbird couple built a nest in our lime tree and a mourning dove couple built a nest in the rain gutter on our house, right around the corner from the mockingbirds. This is one of the two baby mockingbirds sitting in one of our rose bushes, two days after they graduated to fledglings.
When asked why he chose "The Moon and Sixpence" as the title for his novel about the life of a fictional artist based on real life artist Paul Gauguin, W. Somerset Maugham explained that the title was a reference to individuals who, while reaching for the moon, miss the sixpence at their feet. This photo journal is about finding and capturing that sixpence.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual

Hummingbird Swarm
It's not unusual for us, but unusual everywhere else it seems. I don't think I've ever seen so many hummingbirds in one place until we moved to southern California. And this is just one feeder. We have five feeders and there are times when there's five or six birds at each feeder. It's an embarrassment of riches!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Distorted
Words In Water
I love how water distorts, blends, and renders abstract the things that are reflected in its surface. This is a list of Los Angeles County Museum of Art patrons' names carved into a wall and reflected in the fountain at the base of the wall.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Indulge

A Few Extras
I believe, firmly, that one can never have too many books, although some fear that my indulgence in bibliophilia has crossed over into hoarding. Nevertheless, I believe the quotation I once read, posted on a wall in City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco that says "The buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching toward infinity." --A. Edward Newton If this is true, then infinity lives in my garage, not to mention many rooms in my house.

Weekly Photo Challenge: SImple
Meter
I'm always looking out my car window, framing shots as I run errands. The more I look, the more I see and it is often the simplest, most mundane things that capture my attention. As Annie Dillard writes in her book, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, (I paraphrase) life is a now-you-see-it-now-you-don't affair. I try to show up every day with eyes open, to see what I see.
